Programme notes: As the title indicates, this piece is music of a symphonic character. It wants to be understood in terms of linear composition. The harmonies often arise "by chance" from the various melody lines running simultaneously. The line always dominates over the harmony. Even in fortissimo, the movement must not lose a certain transparency. Tension and relaxation of the melody lines determine dynamics and interpretation. The indicated signs of performance are, in a sense, only to be understood as a "framework".
