Programme notes: additional text

Faust (with German title also "Margaret(h)e") is an opera in five acts by Charles Gounod. The premiere took place on 19 March 1859 in Paris (Théâtre-Lyrique), the German premiere on 15 February 1861 in Darmstadt. A new version by the composer was first performed at the Paris Opera on 3 March 1869.

Gounod had already become acquainted with Goethe's Faust poem around 1828. But it was Carré's French version Faust et Marguerite that inspired him to write an opera, which was finally composed between 1856 and 1858 in collaboration with the librettist Barbier. The work was rejected by the Paris Opéra, so it was finally premiered at the Théâtre-Lyrique. The first version was performed in the style of the opéra-comique, i.e. with spoken dialogue. Later, these were replaced by composed recitatives. Some scenes were also added for the performance at the Paris Opera (Romance of Siébel, Aria of Valentin, Ballet Music for Walpurgis Night, Mephisto's Serenade). This version is the version of the opera still in use today.
