Programme notes: additional text

"Metamorphoses" is the transformation of a musical theme while maintaining its basic content.

In variation, on the other hand, a theme is changed and transformed in a variety of ways, such as melodically, harmonically, rhythmically. This can also mean that the variations have a completely different musical character than the original theme. In this context, the paraphrase should be mentioned. This also starts from a theme and implements it, usually with solo bravura elements, for a particular instrument. This includes, for example, concert fantasies for flute on popular opera themes. In order to understand the underlying metamorphoses, it is necessary to take a brief look at Schubert's Ständchen, which forms the basis of the work.

With the text beginning Leise flehen meine Lieder from the cycle Schwanengesang it has always been one of the most popular songs. The large number of arrangements is proof of this. It addresses the distant lover and fluctuates between major and minor, which undoubtedly has a deeper meaning.
