Programme notes: The title of this waltz alludes to a state-of-the-art technological term of the time, meaning in particular the acceleration of a body in the context of mechanics. This term is also a relevant one for musicians, of course: after all, "accelerando" is a performance direction telling players to gradually increase the tempo as they play. The "Accelerationen"waltz, op.234, was composed for the engineer's ball at Vienna's Sophiensaal on 14 February 1860.
