Additional info/contents In 1837, the first railway train in the k.k. Monarchy from Floridsdorf to Deutsch Wagram. A new age had begun with it, the railway became one of the symbols for the technical development of the last century. Soon the "Dampfross" inspired the imagination of the artists and especially of the musicians. Johann Nestroy, the composer of the Viennese Volkskomödie, wrote a farce about "railway marriages"....
The fact that the Strauss family was also drawn under the spell of the new invention was already evident with father Johann Strauss. He had obviously gotten to know the railway in Germany, because his waltz "Erinnerung an Deutschland", published in April1836, followed in October the "Eisenbahn Lust Walzer", Opus 89, which had already been premiered in print on 18 July 1836.

The son Johann Strauss quickly dedicated his Polka "Vergnügungszug", his Opus 281, to the railway. The first performance was on 19 January 1864, the piano edition was published in May this year. Of course, numerous other composers have also musically dealt with the railway phenomenon. Just one example is the Polka "Vergnügungszügler" by Carl Michael Zierer, which was premiered on 26 October 1888.

From the year 1869, the Galopp "Bahn frei", Opus 45 by Eduard Strauss, was released. The world premiere took place on 17 February 1869 in a "befitting" setting, at the ball of the officials of the imperial and royal privileged Nordbahn. Eduard Strauss also dedicated his composition to the Comité of this ball. The piano edition was published by the Viennese publishing house Spina in April 1869 and the orchestra edition followed in autumn of that year. "Bahn frei" has remained well-known and popular to this day and played a special role in the anniversary of "150 Years of Railways in Austria".

Eduard Strauss once again devoted himself musically to the theme of the railway, and he published a fast polka "Mit Dampf" (With Steam) in 1872, his Opus 70. His Polka francaise Opus 166 from 1878, "Reiselust" (Wanderlust), is probably also to be understood as a musical homage to the railway, which was already well established at the time.

Eduard Strauss's "Bahn frei" Op. 45 and its arrangement for lower-level wind orchestra by Gustav Fischer

Viennese musical culture of the 19th century is famous for its magnificent compositions and distinctive styles. An outstanding representative of this era is Eduard Strauss, the younger brother of Johann Strauss II, who was known for his entertaining waltzes and polkas. One of his most notable works is the polka "Bahn frei" Op. 45, which captivates not only with its rousing rhythm but also with its lively melody.

*** "Bahn frei" – A Homage to the Railway Parade ***

The composition "Bahn frei" was published in 1885 and is conceived as a "railway polka." It embodies the spirit of the time, in which the railway represented not only a sign of technological progress but also a symbol of mobility and freedom. Strauss's Polka references the joys of traveling by train and captures the dynamics of the trains in their rhythmic flow. The melodies are catchy and invite the listener to dance, while the polka's characteristic structure lends the music a sparkling lightness.

Gustav Fischer's arrangement for lower-level wind orchestra

Gustav Fischer's adaptation of "Bahn frei" for lower-level wind orchestra is a valuable contribution to expanding the repertoire for young wind ensembles. The arrangement aims to make the technical playability and musical expressiveness of the original accessible to less experienced musicians. Gustav Fischer, a renowned arranger and composer, skillfully adapted the work to optimize its playability for wind instruments and percussion without neglecting the composition's distinctive characteristics.

Fischer's arrangement uses harmonic simplifications and adapted melodies, allowing even less experienced wind players to embody the lively and festive atmosphere emanating from the original. The arrangements also incorporate the instrumentation of a typical junior high school wind orchestra, thus aligning the musical expression with the development of the young musicians. The inclusion of students and their active participation in the performance also fosters interest in the classical musical tradition, which is of great importance for the education of young musicians.

*The combination of Eduard Strauss's "Bahn frei" Op. 45 with Gustav Fischer's arrangement for junior high school wind orchestra is a wonderful example of how classical works can be adapted for new generations of musicians. While the original polka captures the spirit of 19th-century Vienna, Fischer's arrangement allows the energy and joie de vivre of this music to be experienced in a contemporary, school context. This not only promotes the preservation of the musical heritage, but also actively promotes the education and promotion of young talent in the brass music scene. This demonstrates that classical music remains timeless and enduring in its impact, as long as it is prepared for new ears by talented arrangers like Gustav Fischer.*
