Eduard Scherzer: "City Stroll" – A Suite for Wind Orchestra

The suite "City Stroll" by the Austrian composer and arranger Eduard Scherzer (born 1944) is among the most popular works in wind orchestra literature. With a playing time of approximately six minutes, the suite offers a musical journey through four European cities, each represented by characteristic styles and timbres. Scherzer, who worked as a wind musician, composer, and publisher, created a varied and atmospherically rich composition that is both technically and sonically demanding.

Structure and Character of the Suite

The suite consists of four movements, each musically portraying a city. Each movement is characterized by typical musical stylistic elements that capture the atmosphere of the respective city.*

1st Movement: Vienna (March – Waltz – March): The first movement begins with a march, transitions into a Viennese waltz, and finally returns to a march. The Allegro non troppo and the 4/4 time signature with a tempo of 120 beats per minute lend the movement a lively and danceable dynamic.

Typical of the Viennese waltz are the swirling melodies and the steady, flowing rhythm. The instrumentation utilizes the tonal colors of the wind orchestra to underscore the elegance and verve of the waltz. The movement conveys the cheerful and festive atmosphere of Vienna, as experienced in traditional balls and coffee houses.

2nd Movement: Madrid (Paso Doble): The second movement is a paso doble, a Spanish dance characterized by its dramatic nature and military march rhythm. The tempo of 120 beats per minute underscores the energy and fiery style of this dance.

The Paso Doble is known for its staccato rhythms, reminiscent of a bullfighter's entrance. The melody is often fanfare-like and accompanied by distinctive drum rolls. The movement conveys the passionate and fiery atmosphere of Spain, particularly the drama of a bullring.

3rd Movement: Istanbul (Andante sostenuto e cantabile): The third movement, Istanbul, is a slow, lyrical movement in 2/4 time with a tempo of 76 beats per minute. The designation Andante sostenuto e cantabile indicates a calm, flowing, and melodic character.

Here, oriental-sounding melodies and chromatic runs, reminiscent of Turkish music, predominate. The instrumentation often employs soft timbres to create a mystical and contemplative mood. The movement conveys the exotic and contemplative atmosphere of Istanbul, with echoes of traditional Oriental music.

4th Movement: Warsaw (Klezmer Music): The fourth movement is dedicated to Klezmer music, a musical style originating from the Jewish tradition of Eastern Europe. The tempo of 120 beats per minute and the 4/4 time signature lend the movement a lively and danceable dynamic.

Typical of Klezmer music are syncopated rhythms, expressively played melodies, and improvisational elements. The instrumentation utilizes the tonal diversity of the wind orchestra to capture the joyful and melancholic mood of Klezmer music. The movement conveys the vibrant and culturally rich atmosphere of Warsaw, particularly the traditions of the Jewish community.

The technical execution of the suite demands a high degree of precision and stylistic versatility from the musicians, commensurate with their skill level. The changing tempi and characters of the individual movements present diverse challenges in terms of breath control, articulation, and dynamics. In particular, the authentic reproduction of specific musical styles requires a sound understanding of the respective historical and cultural contexts. For conductors, "Städtebummel" (City Stroll) thus offers not only an attractive addition to the repertoire, but also an opportunity to develop the diverse sound of their ensemble. The flexible instrumentation allows the suite to be adapted to various instrumentations, making it suitable for both smaller wind orchestras and larger ensembles.

The suite "Städtebummel" is a typical example of Scherzer's technically sound and sonically rich compositions. It is particularly suitable for intermediate to advanced wind orchestras, as it is both technically and musically demanding. Through the variety of styles, the suite offers a welcome change of pace in the concert program and allows for the presentation of different timbres and playing techniques.
