Programme notes: “In the Realm of Power”, Op. 30, by Reinhard Summerer Reinhard Summerer's composition “In the Realm of Power”, Op. 30, is written for advanced wind orchestras and lasts approximately 13 1/2 minutes. The work is dedicated to the St. Jakob im Walde Music Society (Styria). The three-movement composition combines regional identity, landscape imagery, a legend, and the human capacity to develop inner strength. • 1. The Power of the Earth The first movement is in Andante at 1/4 = 80. It begins with the “St. Jakob Motif” [E♭-D-A-G-B♭]. This sequence of notes is derived from the word St. Jakob and was originally composed for the “Intrada 800”. The motif thus establishes a direct musical connection to the place of dedication and to the St. Jakob im Walde Music Society. The fanfare of the “Intrada 800” develops from this motif. Its festive and representative character emphasizes the regional connection and lends the movement an outward-facing effect. The music then transitions to the "Earth Theme." While the "St. Jakob Motif" designates the specific location, the "Earth Theme" represents the elemental power of the landscape, soil, nature, and permanence. The fanfare returns at the end, creating a formal link between the beginning and the end. The movement thus unites the motif of the dedication site, the fanfare of the "Intrada 800," and the concept of the earth's power into a single musical statement. • 2. The Devil's Stone Legend The second movement is narrative and scenic. It follows the plot of the Devil's Stone Legend and describes Lucifer's sojourn in Hell and his attempt to move the first three giant stones. At the beginning, in the Misterioso at 1/2 = 6, the scene "In Hell. Smoke and fire, Lucifer snorting..." is presented. The very slow tempo creates a mysterious and menacing atmosphere. With the Allegro agitato at 1/4 = 152, the scene "Making a nuisance of Hell" begins. The music becomes faster, more restless, and more driven by movement. At the L'istesso tempo at 1/2 = 76, the scene "Prays for readmission to Heaven" follows. The reduction in tempo forms a clear contrast to the preceding unrest and prepares the scene for the next action. With the A tempo at 1/4 = 152, "the Devil sets to work." The first bell signal marks the beginning of the crucial work phase. Lucifer grasps the first three giant stones and carries them through the air. He then returns to repeat the process. The tension mounts as the carrying frame breaks and time runs out. The second bell signal ends the available time. Lucifer fails and angrily returns to Hell. The two bell signals structure the movement and intensify the sense of urgency. The second movement leads from a somber atmosphere through frantic activity and physical exertion to failure. The connection to the dedication arises from the regional legends that anchor the work in the cultural context of Styria. • 3. The Strength Within Us The third movement, in Moderato at 1/4 = 116, focuses on the inner strength of humankind. It begins tentatively with fragments of the main theme. These fragmentary motifs seem like the first inklings of a musical statement not yet fully developed. After the introduction of the secondary theme, the music gradually builds to the main theme. The previously hinted motivic fragments gain coherence and unity. A key change reinforces this development and lends additional musical power to the arrival of the main theme. The concluding coda takes up the "St. James Motif" [E♭-D-A-G-B♭] once again. This brings the work full circle. The motif connects the inner power of the third movement with the place of dedication and the musical community of the St. Jakob im Walde Music Society. • “In the Realm of Power” represents three different forms of power: the elemental power of the earth, the dramatic and ultimately doomed power in the Teufelstein legend, and the developing inner strength of humankind. The “St. Jakob Motif” and the fanfare of the “Intrada 800” establish a direct connection to the dedication. The regional legend expands this connection with a cultural dimension.
