“La Principessa” by Günter Dibiasi – A musical depiction of childhood and courtly life

“La Principessa” (The Princess) by Günter Dibiasi is a composition for wind orchestra that musically portrays the childhood and courtly life of a young princess in a nuanced and accessible musical language. The work was written as a compulsory piece for the 2013/14 competitions in Level C of the Lower Austrian Wind Music Association (NÖBV) and the Austrian Wind Music Association (ÖBV). With a playing time of approximately 6 ½ minutes, it offers a multifaceted portrayal of the theme, characterized by sonic diversity and expressive musical means.*

Structure and Movement Titles

The work is divided into three sections, which, through their tempo markings and musical characters, form a narrative structure:

1. Moderato patetico (quarter note = 72): The first section begins with a calm yet expressive tempo. The "Moderato patetico" conveys a melancholic and contemplative mood, reflecting the princess's inner experience. Here, soft timbres and harmonic depth dominate, creating an almost fairytale-like atmosphere.

2. Allegro giocoso (quarter note = 160): The middle section shifts to a lively and playful character. The "Allegro giocoso" represents the princess's childlike playfulness and joy. Rhythm and tempo increase, and the wind orchestra unfolds a lively, almost dance-like dynamic. This contrast to the first section underscores the duality between courtly dignity and childlike lightheartedness.

3. Moderato patetico (Quarter = 72): The third section revisits the opening theme and leads the composition to a tranquil yet emotional conclusion. The return to the "Moderato patetico" symbolizes the princess's reflection and inner growth, caught between childlike naiveté and courtly responsibility.

Musical Means and Expression

- Instrumentation and Timbre: Dibiasi utilizes the sonic possibilities of the wind orchestra to depict the various facets of the theme. The use of woodwinds for lyrical passages is particularly striking, while brass and percussion provide rhythmic precision in the lively sections. The nuanced instrumentation allows for the creation of both delicate and powerful soundscapes that reflect the princess's emotions and actions.

- Harmony and Melody: The harmony of the work is characterized by a blend of traditional and modern elements. In the "Moderato patetico," soft chords and chromatic turns dominate, creating an almost impressionistic soundscape. In the "Allegro giocoso," on the other hand, clear major keys and catchy melodies are employed, underscoring the playful lightness of the theme. The melodic lines are consistently catchy, but never superficial; rather, they are thoughtful and expressive.

- Dynamics and Articulation: Dibiasi employs dynamics and articulation with precision to enhance the emotional depth of the composition. Gentle crescendos and decrescendos in the first and third sections convey an almost poetic mood, while accentuated rhythms and staccato passages in the "Allegro giocoso" emphasize the princess's lively and impetuous side. These contrasts contribute significantly to the work's narrative impact.

* "La Principessa" succeeds in musically portraying the life of a young princess in all its facets. The composition combines childlike innocence with courtly elegance, revealing the protagonist's inner development. Through the use of sophisticated musical means—from harmonic depth and rhythmic variety to tonal differentiation—a work emerges that is both emotionally moving and technically demanding. The accessible musical language and clear structure make the piece an ideal repertoire for wind orchestras, captivating both conductors and listeners with its musical storytelling power.
