Programme notes: additional text

With La Principessa Günter Dibiasi has succeeded in creating a true masterpiece. Young people in conflict between the imminent dignity and burden of a ruling office and the realization of their own personality and goals in life, a theme that we repeatedly encounter in stage works, we think of the musical Elisabeth, previously already in operettas, but also in films. In Dibiasi, the princess does not break up in this conflict, she knows how to assert herself. Of course, as a child she already moved in the elitist, courtly world, as this is also expressed musically in the introduction. From the'Allegro giocoso'schraegaus' onwards, however, the childlike grasp of life and unclouded cheerfulness gain supremacy, the princess becomes a carefree child who can enjoy her life undisturbed. From this area the princess is led back into the world of courtly solemnity and dignity. A brief flash of the moving motif of unclouded childhood should show that the princess will go her own way and preserve the "child within herself".
