History of the composition "'S gibt nur a Kaiserstadt, 's gibt nur a Wien!" by Johann Strauss Jr., op. 291

The polka "'S gibt nur a Kaiserstadt, 's gibt nur a Wien!" (op. 291) is a musical work by Johann Strauss Jr., the celebrated "Waltz King" of the 19th century, who not only shaped Vienna's ball culture with his music, but also became a symbol of the heyday of the Danube metropolis. This polka was composed in 1864 and its title already reflects the high esteem for the imperial residence city of Vienna during the time of the Habsburg Empire. The title "'S gibt nur a Kaiserstadt, 's gibt nur a Wien!" comes from a saying by Field Marshal Joseph Count Radetzky, who thereby emphasized the uniqueness and importance of Vienna in the political and social conditions of the time.

This lively polka is one of Strauss's patriotic works and was written for the debut of his composition at the traditional carnival ball in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna. The slightly triumphant, lively character and the fast tempos reflect the cheerful and self-confident mood of Viennese society, which was reflected in the city's dance halls around the middle of the 19th century.

A special highlight of the polka is the coda, which Strauss crowns with a quotation from the "Kaiserhymne". The "Kaiserhymne" or "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser", composed by Joseph Haydn, was the patriotic song of the Habsburg Empire and stands for the connection to Emperor Franz I. With this quotation, Strauss sets a deliberate musical climax and expression of patriotism and loyalty to the imperial residence city. The polka moves between festive lightness and imposing melodies and shows Strauss's feeling for musical expression and cultural allusions.

The polka was performed at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert in 2017 and thus reached an international audience that traditionally celebrates the high points of the Viennese waltz and polka tradition at the beginning of the year. The performance conveyed the lively sonority and magnificent character of the original and brought the euphoria and pride of Viennese history to the concert stage.

The arrangement for wind orchestra by Stefan Ebner

In connection with the performance at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert in 2017, the work again attracted widespread attention. For this occasion, Stefan Ebner arranged the polka for an intermediate wind orchestra in order to make the piece accessible in a modern context. Ebner's arrangement not only offers a sound image worth listening to that retains the original verve and Viennese joie de vivre of the work, but also takes into account the requirements of a wind orchestra by adapting the orchestration accordingly.

This wind orchestra transcription preserves the originality of Strauss's polka and enables music societies and wind orchestras worldwide to present the work in its original splendor and in accordance with modern performance practice. Ebner succeeds in retaining the festive and at the same time patriotic atmosphere of the composition in the wind version and conveying the tonal richness and stylistic elegance of the original.

The 2017 New Year's Concert was thus another example of the importance of the works of Johann Strauss Jr. and their role as musical ambassadors of Vienna. The performance of "'S gibt nur a Kaiserstadt, 's gibt nur a Wien!" brought the cultural and patriotic value of the polka to the hearts of an international audience and showed how timeless Strauss' compositions are. With its festive melodies and the incorporated imperial anthem, the piece evoked memories of Vienna's golden era and the imperial ideals that are still alive in the Austrian musical tradition today.

Johann Strauss Jr.'s polka "'S gibt nur a Kaiserstadt, 's gibt nur a Wien!" remains an outstanding example of classical Viennese dance music and the pride of the city of Vienna. Stefan Ebner's arrangement for wind orchestra has made the festive energy and patriotic spirit of this work accessible to wind orchestras. The performance at the New Year's Concert 2017 once again drew great attention to the work and renewed the connection to Vienna's imperial past in an impressive way.
