Additional info/contents It begins with a lively "Vivace" full of fire and colour, which is driven forward above all by the woodwinds, but also demands considerable agility from the brass. The alternating rhythms demand particular precision. The Moderato (from number 6) with dreamy sound figures from the flute and clarinet brings a brief pause, which continues atmospherically in the orchestra. The final section captivates with melodic and rhythmic variety in brilliant orchestration and in a storming Vivace that demands a lot from the orchestra.
Precisely because of the rapid tempi and the rhythmic subtleties, an upper-level orchestra is probably required to do justice to the work. Here we have folkloristically influenced symphonic wind music with special expressiveness, which makes certain demands on the orchestra and the audience, but which can also become a special programme item at a high-level concert.

Programme notes: additional text

The term "Hategana" comes from Romanian folk music and refers to a traditional dance from the Hațeg region in western Romania. These dances are characteristic for their lively rhythms and melodic lines that reflect the cultural heritage and musical traditions of the region. Karol Padivy, a Czech composer, took inspiration from these traditional dances and named the third movement of his "Romanian Dances" for wind orchestra "Hategana". This composition expresses the vitality and character of Romanian folk dances and is a captivating example of the fusion of traditional music with modern wind orchestra sounds.

The Hategana originates from the Hațeg region in Hunedoara County in Transylvania, Romania. This area is known for its rich folkloric traditions and lively dances. The Hategana is a social dance often performed at festivals and celebrations. It is characterized by fast, rhythmic steps and cheerful melodies, typically played by traditional instruments such as the violin, cymbal and flute.

Musically, the Hategana is characterized by a clear, rhythmic structure supported by repeated patterns and catchy melodies. The music often has a fast beat and uses syncopated rhythms that give the dancers a sense of momentum and energy. The harmonies are usually simple and diatonic, giving the music an accessible and folk-like quality.

The composition "Hategana" by Karol Padivy

Karol Padivy (1908-1992) was a major Czech composer and conductor who specialized in wind music. His works are known for their melodic beauty and ability to incorporate folk elements into orchestral arrangements. The third movement of his "Romanian Dances" for wind orchestra is entitled "Hategana" and is a tribute to traditional Romanian dance.

Padivy has captured the essence of the Hategana dance in his composition by using typical rhythmic patterns and melodies that reflect the character of the dance. The wind section of the orchestra takes on the leading melodies, while the percussion and low wind instruments provide the rhythmic underpinnings. The movement begins with a lively tempo that immediately draws the audience's attention. The rhythmic patterns are clear and precise, which underlines the dance-like character of the music.

The melodies are catchy and folk-like, often with small embellishments and ornaments typical of Romanian folk music. The harmony remains mostly diatonic, which supports the authenticity of the folkloric elements. Padivy uses the full sound spectrum of the wind orchestra to create a rich and colorful soundscape. The combination of woodwinds, brass and percussion provides a dynamic and varied musical texture.

Karol Padivy's composition "Hategana" is an excellent example of how traditional folk music can be integrated into a modern orchestral format. It is frequently performed by wind orchestras and is popular with musicians and audiences alike. The liveliness and rhythmic momentum of the piece make it a highlight in concert programs. The reception of Padivy's "Hategana" has been consistently positive. Musicians appreciate the technical challenge and interpretive scope that the work offers, while audiences enjoy the catchy melodies and energetic performance.

Karol Padivy's "Hategana" is a brilliant musical implementation of a traditional Romanian dance. By skillfully integrating folkloric elements into a symphonic wind orchestra work, Padivy has created a piece that both respects the cultural roots and meets modern musical demands. This work remains a living and inspiring example of the combination of tradition and innovation in music.
