The "Ruetz March" by Erwin Trojan: A Piece of Musical Home

The composition "Ruetz March" by Erwin Trojan is not only a significant musical work, but also an expression of deep cultural roots and a close connection to the Catholic community. Created to mark the 10th anniversary of Franz Ruetz's priesthood, a respected pastor, the march was performed in 1927 as part of the Lower Inn Valley Music Association's music festival. This performance marked a high point of musical life in the region and underscored the close connection between music and church life.

The band of the Catholic youth club "Alpenrose" Mariahilf, founded in 1922, played a central role in the creation and performance of the "Ruetz March." At a time when many social changes were taking place and the world was reorienting itself after the First World War, the band offered a space for community and cultural expression. The performance of the march was not only a tribute to Franz Ruetz's priestly ministry, but also a declaration of the identity and solidarity of the boys in Mariahilf.

Dr. Friedrich Anzenberger emphasized the band's role in the regional musical landscape and emphasized the importance of such musical works in keeping traditions alive and strengthening a community. The "Ruetz March" represents the effort to continue the locally rooted musical tradition and to unite the community through culture.

The march originated at a time when brass band music played a prominent role in cultural life in Austria. Brass bands were not only musical ensembles but also social institutions that brought the local community together. In this context, the "Ruetz March" stands as a celebration of community and spiritual values and reflects the pride of the region.

With its clear melodies and lively rhythms, the march embodies the typical style of brass band music of that time. It became a symbol of identity and community life and is still played today on numerous occasions – from church festivals to local celebrations.

Musically speaking, the "Ruetz March" is an excellent example of a march-like composition in the wind band genre. It combines catchy melodies with a concise, dynamic character that invites both performance and participation. The harmonic structures and orchestral arrangements make it particularly appealing and accessible.

Hans Kliment's arrangement for intermediate wind band gives the march a contemporary touch and opens it up to a wider range of performance possibilities. Kliment understands how to respect the original work while simultaneously infusing it with new playing styles and interpretations. This makes the "Ruetz March" interesting not only for experienced wind musicians but also for young talents being introduced to wind band playing.
