Programme notes: additional text

Millöcker made his debut as an operetta composer in Vienna in 1871, the same year as Johann Strauss, with "Drei Paar Schuhe". After "Das verwunschene Schloss" (1878, Vienna), "Gräfin Dubarry" (1879) and "Apajune, der Wassermann" (1880, Vienna), he made his breakthrough on the operetta stage with "Der Bettelstudent" (1882, Vienna) and "Gasparone" (1884). The idea of the folk operetta, which had been disregarded and ridiculed for years, had thus become a brilliant and resounding reality.

"Both Millöcker and Suppe were superior to Johann Strauss in their knowledge of the stage effect, of the scenic impact. What the latter often has to achieve by way of a brilliant melodic idea, they achieve with a few bars, with a quick stage wit ... Strauss had to carelessly squander the gifts of genius in the operetta, while Suppe ... and Millöcker appeared as a clever, experienced administrator of a great talent", wrote Ferdinand Scherber in the Wiener Zeitung in 1899.

With Der Feldprediger (1884), Der Vizeadmiral (1886), Die sieben Schwaben (1887), Der arme Jonathan (1890) and three other late works, he was unable to follow up on these successes. Karl Millöcker died at the age of 58 on 31 December 1899, like Carl Zeller the year before, in Baden near Vienna.
