Programme notes: additional text

Bizet's most famous work, the opera Carmen (1875), is based on the novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée from 1846, and Bizet composed the leading role for mezzo-soprano.
At first Carmen was not well received by the audience, but finally received praise from famous contemporaries such as Debussy, Nietzsche, Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky. Brahms attended over twenty performances and regarded them as the best opera that has been performed in Europe since the Franco-German War. The views of these composers proved prophetic, as Carmen has since become one of the most popular works in all opera literature.
However, Bizet could not witness Carmen's success more. The international success of the opera began a few months after its premiere in Vienna in October 1875. The exhausting rehearsals and the initial failure exhausted his strength, so that he died of another heart attack on June 3 at the age of 36. He was buried at Père Lachaise in Paris.
