Programme notes: additional text

The search for true love - and its triple-failure - form the basis of one of the most scintillating, rousing and simultaneously moving operas of the late 19th century.

The work's 1881 première took place in Paris, four months after the death of its composer - a composer who had dealt with such topics for thirty years, and who had already created the grandiose Barcarole for his Rhine Nymphs of 1864, and had written the Song of Antonia's Mother for the 1872 opera Fantasio.
This grand medley presents this work's most famous melodies in the fine sounds and tone colours, which often shine through the spectacular operatic plot to illuminate the dephts of the soul, and which are every bit as persuasive and lively todays as they were back then. Beginning with Hoffmann's Ballade of Kleinzach, containing a splendid oboe solo, the musical plot - which follows the original work's musical development, rather then the dramatic plot - extends to cover the love duet of Hoffmann and Antonia, the invitation for the puppet Olympia's appearance followed by her grotesque and delicate waltz, and finally the omortal Barcarole and the singing illusion of Antonia's mother. The opera - and this medley - end in the wine cellar with a superficial, intoxicated, and resigned celebration of life.

This is magnificent opera music, which rich colours glow particularly bright when brought to life by a large wind orchestra.
