Programme notes: While contemporary novels are primarily concerned with the plot, with the fact that something happens, the baroque novel was an encyclopaedia of knowledge, of world views, of political and religious disputes. Which is also visually evident in insertions and footnotes and has led to the gigantic length of some works. The highest praise for author and novel was the qualification as "meaningful", i.e. the novel had to be useful for the enrichment of knowledge. The Musicalisch-Türckische Eulen-Spiegel from 1688 is thus nothing more than the "musical supplement" to a time-critical "war and adventure novel" modelled on Grimmelshausen's "Simplizissimus". To illustrate the events of the war, Speer used "folk songs", especially from the Slovak-Hungarian region, some time before the term even existed. His "Eulen-Spiegel" can thus also be regarded as an early folk music collection and given appropriate attention.
