Programme notes: additional text

This 9th Symphony is symptomatic for Dvorak's third creative phase, which coincides with its stay in America. Characteristic for the new phase is also the title of the work, From the New World. The melodies are inspired by spirituals and American songs. The best-known part of it is probably the cor-anglais solo in the second movement.

Antonin Dvorak's 9th Symphony From the New World is the result of his stay in America and one of the masterpieces of music history. The composition is symptomatic of Dvorak's third creative phase and indicative of the new direction he took during this time. Many of its melodies are inspired by American spirituals and songs, and the most famous passage from them is the English horn solo in the second movement. With its intensity and passion, this work is a real joy, both for musicians and listeners. It embodies the energy and pioneering spirit of America and is therefore an unforgettable piece of classical music that everyone should listen to.
