Programme notes: additional text

"Glücklicher Tag" is a small overture in three parts (A-B-A). Part A begins with a cheerful motif in the home key. A melodic intermediate section, characterised by strong modulation, forms a contrast, but then leads back to the opening motif and ends part A. A transition prepares Part B, which brings a Viennese melody in 6/8 time, whose rapturous shaping is not entirely easy for the conductor due to the designation "tempo rubato". It will be advantageous to conduct the 6/8 bar on two beats, and then switch to eighth beats each time the tempo is reduced. (Usually in the 4th bar of a four bar group). A transition with an idiosyncratic rhythmic design leads back to part A, where the opening motif is imitated by the woodwinds.
