Programme notes: additional text

As the second of his Romanian dances, Pádivy has chosen a Hora. The word means nothing other than "round dance". Already in a Bible translation into Romanian of the late 17th century, the term "hora" is used for the Old Testament dance around the golden calf. According to translation and tradition, Dionysus also danced the hora.
There are no less than 1420 (!) names for forms and varieties of the hora in Romania. Proverbially, "to line up for the hora" is equated with "whoever says A must also say B". So whoever starts something must also take the next steps, complete it. "Hora" is not the dance alone, but also the round song, i.e. the song that is sung to the dance. Subsequently, "hora" is also used to describe folk songs and folk ballads. But folk dance entertainments are also called "hora". Finally, "going to the hora" also means going out to dance for the first time. The extremely widespread Reigen is thus synonymous with dancing in general.
A round dance is a dance in a circular form. So it is not surprising that the word "hora" is also used in architecture for apses, i.e. semicircular and circular attachments to altar rooms, galleries, round-shaped fixtures in church rooms (organ galleries, reign oratories). Finally, hay gathered for drying can also be called a "hora", which is certainly not surprising because a hayloft is also round in shape. The main area of distribution of the "hora" is Wallachia. But in all parts of Romania there are forms, as already mentioned, under a large number of names.
The basic form of the "hora" can be described as typical and classic for Romanian folk dance in general.
