Programme notes: additional text

The nature-loving Beethoven was drawn to the countryside in summer. He loved exercise in the fresh air, and long walks not only brought him relaxation, but also served as an important source of inspiration with their diverse impressions. Thus these stays were at the same time phases of concentrated artistic creation. He chose Mödling, which he had presumably become acquainted with in 1799, as his summer residence in the years 1818-1820. These Mödlinger Tänze were also written there.
