Programme notes: additional text

When one speaks of the "waltz century" as that of the Strauss dynasty, it is by no means to say that there were no musically sophisticated waltzes composed after the First World War. Surely the times were not conducive to the joie de vivre normally found in a waltz, and post-1945 dance music was given over to entirely different rhythms. But the waltz as a pan-European cultural phenomenon maintained is prominence, becoming part of concert life and, hence, part of the original wind music repertoire. In Austria, the waltzes of Hans Kliment are a perfect example of this development.
Tanz in den Himmel brings one closer to heaven and the vision of eternal happiness in pulsing sound cascades, while formally it articulates a newly cosmopolitan and quite European musical language. This waltz certainly does not deny its Viennese roots, but it has indeed become a musical world citizen.
